Notice Board: message content.     Email forwarding.
Viewing notice board messages.
Go to www.ipplepen.net and from the top of the left side menu click Ipplepen.Net Notice Board and the notice board will appear in the main window showing the most recent post.

You can scroll down the messages until you reach something that catches your eye. You will also see follow-up comments

Or on the right of the message text under the header photo is a list of just message titles that you can browse down. Click the title to go to the message.

Or at the top left in the blue headline is a search box. Type in you query and then click the 'search blog' link immediately to the right. This searches message headers, body text and tags and will take you first to the most recent post that matches your search term(s). In the short-term this will however take you away from the Ipplepen.Net main site, though I hope this will not happen when the notice board is hosted on the ipplepen.net site.

Signing up for the notice board.

Before you can post new messages or leave comments you'll have to register with this notice board and you will need a Google account (because for the time being this notice board is being hosted by Google just until I'm happy with the way it works and can make the neccessary connections on the internet that will allow me to shift it to the ipplepen.net site).

If you DO NOT already have a Google account then to register with the notice board you'll need to send me an email through the www.ipplepen.net website and ask to join the notice board. I'll set you up an @ipplepen.net email forwarding address, which is both to protect the privacy of your home email address and also it considerably simplifies administration at my end. You will then receive 2 emails from me through your new ipplepen.net address. (It takes from 5 minutes up to 24 hours for the email address to become active so I will delay sending the message for 24 hours because if you go to the next stage and it's not active you can't proceed.) One of these emails will be personalised and will contain information about using your @ipplepen.net email address and the notice board. The second is an automated email telling you that you are invited to join the notice board and contains a link that you should click and follow to activate your notice board membership.

You will then need to get a free google account (http://www.google.com/accounts/newaccount) using the @ipplepen.net address as your username. You will then be able to logon to the ipplepen.net notice board and post messages and comments.

If you already have a Google account then all you need to do is send me an email through the ipplepen.net website asking to join the notice board. I will add you to the user list and you will get an automated message containg a link you must click to join the notice board.

This rather long winded approach means that I control who can contribute. It also means that I can block a users access at 2 levels if they use the facility inappropriately.

Posting notice board messages and comments.
Firstly, at this stage I am not going to place a restriction on the users that can read the messages, what you post can potentially be seen by anyone with an internet connection. So, for your own peace of mind I suggest you do not include your real email address, phone number etc. That is however your choice.

Go to www.ipplepen.net and from the top of the menu click Ipplepen.Net notice board and the notice board will appear in the main window showing the most recent post.

To post a follow up comment, just click where it says comments under the main message, a panel opens to type your comment, your notice board username and (possibly) some security letters, though I may be able to turns this off as it's very annoying.

To post a new message you must first logon to the notice board using the sign in box at the top right of the notice board page.

You can write messages in 3 ways: 1) Write the message as a text file using microsoft notepad or other plain text editor, then when you logon to the notice board copy and paste it into the message body. DO NOT write it as a word processor document as it will appear as rubbish because of the hidden formatting.

2) Write the message whilst online using the message editor.

For both of the above you can use the online text editor to format the text, choose different fonts, add photos etc.

3) There is an html editor but I have not used that yet.

The message author can return to the message in a subsequent session and edit the message.

Notice board message content.
Acceptable Content for Messages

Notices of events being held by local organisations, items to exchange, give away or wanted: books, DVDs, CDs, toys, films, household etc, your own photos.

Unacceptable Content for Messages

Messages and/or photos that would allow other people to be identified or personal details of other users. Your notice board access will be permanently deleted.

Messages promoting your business, there is a separate section on Ipplepen.Net that is much better suited to that.

This is a moderated notice board, which means I get a copy of every message and comment that is posted and I can edit or delete any content that I feel is inappropriate

Disclaimer. My intention is to provide a safe and pleasant environment for all users. However, as I have set it up and as I am (for the moment) the only administrator I feel I am in part responsible for maintaining that safe and pleasant environment. No-one is entitled to expose another person to risk (real or imaginary). If I feel this has occurred I will block access on an entirely non-negotiable basis.
Adults are perfectly entitled to put themselves at whatever risk they choose and expose other consenting adults to risk but I insist they do it elsewhere.
If this facility is repeatedly disrupted I shall simply close it down and delete it.

Email forwarding.
Email forwarding does just that automatically and privately.

The address your-name@ipplepen.net automatically redirects mail sent to that address to your inbox on your computer. It's a completely private automated system. You do nothing, no new email account to set up, nothing.

So why would you want it?

Well, your-name@ipplepen.net may be easier for your friends to remember than yourname678(because someone else already had the name you wanted)@the_name_of_your_email_provider.co.uk

And, everyone wants to know your email address these days, from the electoral role to the website of the last shop you went to. Most are honest but when you start getting deluged with junk mail into your home mailbox what do you do? If you change your home email you have to go around all your friends to get them to update the address they have for you.
So use email forwarding for all those times when you don't really want to give out your email address and keep your home address just for people you trust. For example, use the name bills_shopping@ipplepen.net for online buying. The buying confirmation simply turns up in your email box but when the junk starts arriving just get the forwarding changed to bills_new_shopping@ipplepen.net and all the nasty mail stops.

You may just like the idea of being your-name@ipplepen.net

It's free.

So,
chris.popham@ipplepen.net
chris_popham@ipplepen.net
chrispopham@ipplepen.net
pophamfamily@ipplepen.net
are all valid examples.
so is
chris@ipplepen.net
but whereas chris_popham is probably fairly unique, chris is not, so if you want just your first name you'll have to contact me quickly.
just ask for email forwarding and tell me the_name_you_want_to_use@ipplepen.net and I'll send you a welcome message.
